The premiere starts after the aftermath of last season with Castle believing the whole Kate thing was a dream. But then she walks in holding two coffees and they talk about their ‘moment’. While this should be epic, we couldn’t help find the whole scenario hilarious. It was like watching a teenager try to cover his tracks, which is exactly what Castle does as his mom walks in (after he’s told Kate to hide). All along, his mom is talking while he’s trying to discreetly hide Kate’s bra with his foot. It gets better when he goes to the kitchen and finds his mom and Alexis at the counter. Turns out Alexis is hung over. Of course, Castle starts babbling about his disappointment but begins to talk fast as Kate tries to make her escape.
Elsewhere, Ryan is attempting to find the man that shot Kate. He decides to take the information he has to Kate’s apartment where he finds Castle there. They all look at the picture. Kate doesn’t recognize the man but Castle does. It happens to be the man that is keeping Kate safe.
Javi wants to find Maddox’s real name, so he ask a friend for help to get into the D.O.D. database. Finally Castle and Kate find out the name of the man who has the file is Smith. But when they locate him they discover that Maddox found him first and beat him up. Fortunately, Mr. Smith is still alive and as the ambulance is taking him he says the number 86 to Castle. He tells Kate it’s a clue. He is certain Mr. Smith has to have a copy of the file. He searches and finds the address: 86 Markwell Street. It takes them to a building under construction. They discover exactly where the file is, but Maddox is right there waiting. He ties them up and puts them in a room. He then goes to look for the number where it leads to a safe on the floor.
In the meanwhile Castle finds a screw and tries to cut the rope with it. First of all, the best line of the night goes to Castle as he says “If we get murdered I would feel ripped off.” Luckily for us, they don’t. Esposito shows up to the rescue as he was on a lookout for Maddox car when he saw Castle’s car and entered the building. He also happens to overhears them say they should have ‘done it’ 4 years ago.
The episode only gets better as Maddox reaches to open the safe and a bomb blows up, killing him in the aftermath. But when everything looks grim, Ryan brings Castle, Kate and Esposito the pieces of the file. They manage to put enough together to get a bank number, which belong to Senator Bracken. At the time, he was an assistant D.A in New York, so the timeline fits perfectly to the deaths. We find out he was getting dirty money and then as his career climbed, he had to clean up anything that would tie him to a scandal.
They visit Smith at the hospital, but he won’t testify. He only protected Kate as a favor to Montgomery. Talking outside of the hospital Castle and Kate notice an odd cop who was watching Smith, so they they run back up to the room. But they arrive to late as Smith is dead after having a heart attack. When they look at the hospital cameras, they find nothing amiss. Castle wants to take Kate somewhere to be safe, but she says she will never be safe. She decides to confront Bracken, and the two come to an understanding. But for those of us who though Kate would get her job back at end, thought wrong. Turns out she has to wait the whole suspension period before she can get back on the force. But this doesn’t seem to bother her much as she has Castle to…ahem keep her company.
