[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s we move forward in life, we will inevitably face obstacles and hurts along the way. With those struggles can bring negativity exists, it doesn’t mean that everything is destined to always remain in the dark. This is where positive thinking and seeing the glass as half-full comes in.
Positivity and optimism does not ignore negativity entirely; they’re an attitude and mindset where you always opt for what cultivates and enhances well-being and happiness. Both practices are understandably met with skepticism when it comes to improving one’s health, however science over the years has proved they have significant effects on one’s mental and physical state.
No matter what you’re experiencing in life at the moment, things will get better with an uplifting attitude, so don’t underestimate looking on the bright side. And to jumpstart your “Today is Great” attitude, we are sharing 8 reasons why positive thinking could be exactly what you need to make this year your year.
Influences the choices you make
You stop having tunnel vision and see the bigger picture of things when you start to think positively. A negative frame of mind limits your perspective on the world around you, causing you to believe that the problems you are facing will never go away. But that is never true. A positive mindset inspires you to make choices that counteract negativity and let go of roadblocks that are limiting your success.
Encourages you to love yourself
Positivity leads to an improved sense of self and cultivates self-love. Negativity is toxic to one’s confidence because it makes you feel that you are never good enough. Negative self-talk, specifically, is the number one culprit of poor self-esteem. Analyze the tone of your self-talk. Would you speak to a friend the way you speak to yourself right now? If you feel that your negativity is spiraling out of control, fear not! There is a well of resources on the Internet, professionals, and even phone apps, and available to facilitate positivity into your life.
Directly impacts the well-being of your body
According to a study by Suzanne Segerstrom, a psychology professor at the University of Kentucky, an experiment conducted on 124 law students concluded that over the course of a year, positive thinking directly affected and strengthened the immune response of said students. The results showed significantly higher rates of an immune response when experiencing optimism. Subsequently, positive thinking has been found to also combat the risk of an individual developing cardiovascular diseases later on in life, decreases symptoms of depression, and even prolongs lifespan. Negative thinking, on the other hand, has an entirely different effect on the body. It weakens the immune response, lowers libido, triggers insomnia, and actually makes you more susceptible to sickness and fatigue.
Reduces your overall stress
Too much stress leads to bodily problems, such as digestive issues and high blood pressure and even puts you at risk for developing depression and anxiety. But when you implement an optimistic attitude when dealing with stress, you learn to sustain a calmer and more grounded state of mind in the face of overwhelming emotions.
Develops resilience and destroys the “victim” mindset
There are things in this world that we can never control, no matter how hard we try. But when you’re able to stay optimistic about the future, you have an easier go at focusing more on the things you can change. This in turn motivates you to take action so you make the most out of challenges rather than fearing them. According to a Harvard University survey, those who practiced optimistic mindsets at 25 were significantly happier and healthier in their 60’s compared to pessimists. So think victorious, not victim.
Attracts a Better Environment
You attract what you are: if you’re positive, healthy relationships and meaningful experiences are more likely to be a part of your life. If you’re negative, chances are that almost everything and everyone around you feels like nothing is ever good enough. What you project to the world will be returned to you. So surround yourself with positive people and situations that encourage your growth.
Reinvigorates and energizes you
Kickstart you creativity and productivity with a healthy dose of positivity. It can be the much-needed catalyst to help you commit to finishing tasks and accomplishing goals. Negativity on the other hand, drains your energy and kills motivation, which will leave you physically and emotionally exhausted. You will not only feel better with an optimistic view of life, you will also be setting yourself on the right path to happiness, fulfillment, and success before you know it!
Helps You Enjoy Life to the Fullest
Last but certainly not least, staying positive helps you learn how to make the most out of life. You don’t necessarily stop seeing what’s negative in the world. Rather, you accept that it exists and choose to focus on the good that is present instead. Making the most out life becomes more important than feeling intimidated and fearful of it.
Life is too short to always see the glass as half-empty, and a negative attitude never helped anyone. Positive thinking and optimism have a unique power and reminds us that despite there being negativity and pain in this world, it doesn’t mean that we’re doomed to always experience a sad ending or suffering. Rather, there’s always hope and a bright side to life – as long as we work toward seeking it.

Very well written…Keep up the good work
I am so glad to come across this post. I stay positive by thanking God for all the things I have – I find gratitude the most amazing way to be positive.

Feeling great after reading this post, for some reason it gives me energy- the positive energy. I do believe positive people attract good things and nice people.
People say I am always so positive. So positive thinking will also help others.
Positivity is important, I agree. I tend to think of positivity in the context of joy though. I have joy because of what I am rooted in that keeps me secure regardless of what comes my way in the day to day. I can be positive not out of my own strength or vain hope for the future, but because of promises that I know to be true and have seen to be true. <3
I so agree with this! Negative thoughts take way too much energy.
Thank you for sharing this. Your last paragraph is really what I needed to read right now, thank you. These days I really struggle to stay positive, hopefully I’ll get back there one day.

Having positive thinking even during the worst times gives us calmness, and think of a better option with less damage. I learn a lot from the recent Thai Cave Rescue, and it teaches me valuable lessons in life.

This is so true. What you focus on thinking about really shapes your day. It is definitely better to think positive. I was told once in my life experiences I could have chosen to be bitter, but instead they noticed I chose to be better. That really stuck with me. Thanks for sharing!
I love the point about destroying the victim mindset. That is so important to living a good life you really enjoy! Most people don’t realize how their negativity is keeping them a victim to their circumstances.

I really need to keep reminding myself to be a positive thinker
My main way to tay positive is to dismiss negativity as soon as it comes into my mind. What I dwell on is what I make my reality so I focus on the good and positive in thoughts, actions and inspirational reminders as much as I can.
I agree negative thinking carries to much weight and brings the person down in many ways, positive thinking is always necessary to counter the effects of negative thinking and effects. Thanks for the post.
