[dropcap]G[/dropcap]ardening enthusiasts have long insisted that the stuff they grow is better than what the grocery store sells. As it turns out, they might be right. Numerous studies have shown that homegrown produce is often healthier and tastier than what you’d find at your local supermarket. Here’s why.
Doesn’t Degrade and Lose Nutrients
Fruits and vegetables from your own garden are about as fresh as it gets. You can pick them when they’re at their ripest, and when they have peak nutrients and flavor.
Grocery store produce, on the other hand, may travel thousands of miles before reaching supermarket shelves. During this long journey, it may lose some of its nutrients and flavor, especially if it has been exposed to heat.
To reduce costs, stores may ship items in non-ideal conditions. For example, different fruits and vegetables stay fresh best at different temperatures, but they may get sent together to lower expenses.
Research continues to find the healthy benefits of fresh produce as opposed to store bought. In fact, a study conducted by Kew Gardens researchers found that homegrown varieties of tomatoes had more natural sugars, anti-oxidants and phenols ( a type of nutrient-rich compound).
Grocery Stores Don’t Buy for Quality
Grocery stores want high-quality products, but they also have a lot of other characteristics they look for in what they buy.
For instance, they only stock produce that meets certain aesthetic standards because people are more likely to buy products if they look appealing. That means slightly misshapen tomatoes get discarded, even if they’re more nutritious than other perfectly round ones.
When buying items that need to be shipped long distances, supermarkets choose products that can survive these long trips. But this also means that some of the nutritional value is compromised.
No Pesticides or Herbicides
When you grow your own food, you control what goes into it and onto it. You can be sure it isn’t exposed to herbicides or pesticides–both of which have bad long-term effects.
Food from the store, on the other hand, may have been treated with pesticides, herbicides and other contaminants that are difficult to remove entirely. Even food labeled as “pesticide-free” could have come into contact with something accidentally. Now with homegrown food, you remove the doubt.
You’ll Likely Eat More
When you plant a garden, especially a larger one, you’ll likely eat more fruits and vegetables than you otherwise would. This is, in part, because you simply have more produce on hand, and it stays fresher for longer.
You’ll also have more pride in the food you grow than food you buy, which will encourage you to incorporate more fruits and veggies in your meals. Not to mention the fact that it tastes better.
Exercise and Sun
The work you do planting, weeding, watering and otherwise working on your garden will also help boost your fitness.
Doing light to moderate gardening outdoors for an hour can burn up to 330 calories (or more), as well as get your daily dose of vitamin D. Studies show that regular gardening can reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke and extend life by 30 percent for adults over age 60. It has also been shown to boost mood and mental health.
While good fruits and vegetables can be found at a grocery store, there is something extra special about homegrown produce right in your backyard. So we definitely recommending giving gardening a go.

My personal opinion is that home food tastes way better and the most amazing thing is just to go to the garden in the morning anf pick fresh vegetables.
Growing your vegetables means fresh and full of flavour. When you grow your own food, you control what goes into it and onto it. You can be sure it isn’t exposed to herbicides or pesticides.
I have tried so many times to garden and grow my own food and always end up failing… I may try again though because it really appeals to me to have my own food growing at home.
There is something amazing about growing your own food. It always tastes so much better than the alternatives and it is great it is more healthy for you too!
Love this post so much, this so true because I recently started growing my own produce and it’s 100 organic!!! Tastes even better than what I get from the grocery stores on any regular day. It’s also very easy to grow yours, cheaper and healthier
I wish I could grow stuff, but alas, I have a black thumb. I always envy those that can grow things. My mom grows some delicious tomatoes!
Some great information here. this year we grew our own tomatoes, but ended up with half containing blossom end rot, so next year we need to buy something to help with that.
I’ve always kept a garden, sometimes huge gardens (3, 12×12 plots) sometimes smaller. This is the first time I’m without it because we knew we were moving this year. With no backyard in the new house (it’s all deck) I’m planting herbs in the empty flower bed out front, and joining the community garden! If anyone needs proof that everything tastes fresher, take a bite of a store-bought carrot, then take a bite from one that’s been home-grown or comes from the farmer’s market – they taste SO much better!
Growing your own food will definitely give you best thing you can eat, I wish I had the space to do so. Great post..!!
I live in the desert so I cant really grow much. I do try and buy frozen as they have more nutrients than the fresh stuff at my store.
I have always wanted to grow my own food but I have a black thumb and kill everything! I want to try again this year!
I have always wondered about that. I love eating my own veggies but was wondering if they’re as good as the ones I buy in the store!!
It’s my dream to have a farm house to plant my own vegetables. I think they will always taste better if you do it yourself. Good point there, it’s always about the money and we can’t imagine where or how the products gets to us. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve always wanted to have my own little garden! My grandfather always had one tucked away where he would grow a few of his favorite vegetables. I won’t be able to have one until I either move…or put up a fence. Too many deer!

I’ve always liked the idea of growing my own produce, maybe I’ll finally start. Thanks for sharing all this great information.
I think gardening has definitely some great benefits, it’s just about finding time to take care of it and also having space for a garden!
I believe it is true that it’s better. I haven’t put much effort into but I always wanted to try gardening. It’s just one of those things to have to make time for out of your already busy day.
We try to grow our own food, but slugs, ants, and other pest often get to them before we can harvest the fruits and vegetables of our labor. If I was a better gardener then I would try to grow more options.
I’ve always believed that growing your own food is better than store-bought products. Thanks for all the thought-provoking info and advice.
I completely agree, growing your own food is so much better!
Well, yeah this is a very useful tips in keeping on budget meals and plus if you are concerned about health. Using this tips will absolutely make you think. Thanks for writing this article.
I used to grow my own food back in the DR Congo. I haven’t tried to do that where I live. I enjoyed it back home. I think I will get into it more.
Growing your own is so fun, especially with kids!
I love gardening and I would really enjoy growing food! It must also be so rewarding to see in your plate the fruit of your hard labour!
I started a garden this summer and loved picking fresh veggies! It’s just an overall nice feeling! It does take work to maintain, but it’s definitely doable and so rewarding!
I totally agree with you. I have also noticed that with most groceries stores. I guess I need to go back to gardening my own food
I agree that if you grow it you feel more invested and are going to eat more of what is in the garden. Same is true for the kiddos in the house so we get them involved.
Great points! My kids have been asking to start a garden now that we have a backyard, I need to learn more about it (I’m new to Florida and what grows well here) and get started ASAP!
It is good to grow food by yourself. Just pluck the fresh food nd eat… Thanks for sharing.
I think it is a wonderful thing to grow your own veg. Super healthy for me and the family.
I would love to grow my own food some day. Now I only have a pot of Basil. I guess it’s a good start.
Yes I like it, because we can get fresh veggies and fruit from the garden than the wilted one from the aisle. I grown as much as possible.
It’s so important to know about the pesticides that are/are not being used. I am SO bad with growing things, but I am trying hard to get better at it for sure!
I totally agree with all the points that you have mentioned above. I wish I had more space at my home to do gardening and growing my own plants!
We’ve just recently harvested our own pumpkins and bitter gourds. It actually feels great to pick the fruits directly from the plant. There’s the sense of pride and satisfaction. And of course, we are assured that it’s 100% pesticide free. I’d definitely recommend people to have their own vegetable garden at home.
