The relationship you have with your family is one of the most meaningful types of relationship you’ll have in your life. They’ve been with you from the very start, you’ve shared many great moments together, and you’ve been there for each other through the ups and downs. With all that in mind, it’s safe to say that you should never stop working on your family bonds. One of the best ways to form and strengthen those bonds is through holiday traditions, and here’s why.
Traditions serve as an anchor

Eventually, your kids will start moving out and creating their own families. As sad as that might sound, it’s an inevitable part of growing up. During that time, traditions will help root your family; they will serve as something stable that never changes. It’s one of the things that can keep your family close no matter how far your kids move away or how many other changes happen in your family life. Plus, if your children ever start feeling lonely or sad, traditions will be there to remind them that they are never alone, and they’ll give them something to look forward to.
They give your family a sense of identity

There will be times when you feel lost or unsure about your identity. However, if you continue practicing holiday traditions in the same way as always, it’ll be easier for you to remember who you are. Consequently, this can also help you figure out who you want to be. Moreover, holiday traditions are a great way to celebrate what makes your family unique. For example, you might love making cookies together for Christmas, or you might have a special type of gift that you always give to your kids, like a meaningful book for every birthday. Those types of traditions will give your family character, and they will help your kids build their own identities.
They provide an opportunity for giving

Speaking of gifts, holiday traditions offer your family an opportunity to give each other meaningful gifts that can show how much you care about one another. It’s also a great way to teach your children that the best Father’s Day gifts are those that carry a deeper meaning, and not those generic gifts that you can find in any store. The same goes for Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, and any other holiday gifts – they don’t have to be expensive, and they don’t even have to be store-bought. However, if you want them to be meaningful, they should be in some way personalized, and they should reflect the character of the person you’re buying them for.
They encourage spending time together

Leading a modern lifestyle very often implies having busy schedules, little time for friends, and even less time for family. However, if you manage to stick to your family traditions, they can help you maintain the balance between your professional life and your personal one. Setting some time aside for all the holidays that you will be spending with your family means that you’d actually be together and investing time in your family relationships. Even if it’s just once a month, it’s still enough to maintain your family bonds and catch up with everything that’s going on in the lives of your family members and relatives.
They help you create lasting memories

One of the best things about family holidays is that even after they are finished, you’d still be left with beautiful memories. And the more of them you have, the stronger your family bonds will be, as you will always associate your family with those great memories. Plus, such memories can benefit your kids as well. They are more likely to grow up into caring and generous adults if they are a part of stable and loving family traditions while growing up. Memories are also great conversation starters, whether during a coffee break at work or at some other family gathering. They make you feel good on the inside, and even though you might forget what kind of gifts you got for Christmas five years ago, you will always remember how much fun you had with your family.
Families that nurture their traditions are usually much stronger than those that don’t do many things together. There are many benefits of family holiday traditions, from providing you with an opportunity to actually interact with your family to helping you create some amazing, long-lasting memories. So, if you have any holiday traditions that bring your family together, make sure to nurture them.

I love having holiday traditions. Our big one is that I give the same Christmas Eve gift to my kids every year: a book, Christmas pjs, and a special ornament.
