[dropcap]S[/dropcap]ushi is one of our favorite fun foods to indulge in whether it’s picking up a Spicy Tuna roll from Trader Joes or going out for fresh sashimi at our favorite Japanese restaurant in downtown LA. We just can’t get enough of it. With a recent sushi outing fresh on our mind, we decided to don our aprons, roll up our sleeves and try our hand at sushi-making for the first time. As we’ve never done anything similar in the kitchen, we opted for a simple Temaki or hand roll for our first try. And since we love putting our special touch to a recipe, we couldn’t resist spicing up a classic California roll. Shocking we know, but trust us these Temaki rolls are quick and easy to make and satisfy our sushi cravings. Learn how you can make your own Chicken California Temaki rolls with this easy to follow recipe.

Lay a paper towel on your counter before you get started this way your seaweed sheet won’t stick to your work surface, and will make the clean up easier.
Step 1
Take a seaweed sheet and lay it down on the paper towel. Scoop about a 1 to 2 table spoons of sushi rice and lightly spread the rice on the seaweed sheet. Tip: Dipping your fingers in cold water and then spreading the rice makes the process much easier.
Step 2: Veggie Roll Option
For those wanting a veggie roll, just add the carrots, cucumbers and avocado for a classic California roll–albeit the seafood. You can take one side and roll it to the other for a simple Temaki roll.
Step 2: Chicken California Roll
Now for those wanting a twist on the classic, lightly spread the sushi rice on half of the seaweed sheet. Add the carrots, cucumber, avocado, pickled radiches and chicken.
Step 3
To create a cone shaped roll, simply take one corner of the sheet and start to slowly roll it slighty diagonal so it takes that cone shape. Once it’s rolled, just tuck the end. Repeat the steps until you’ve used all the sheets or you no longer have any more ingredients.

Place the Temaki rolls on a serving platter, pour a bit of the sodium (or regular) soy sauce and add the wasabi and ginger on the side. Enjoy immediately!
