[dropcap]E[/dropcap]ver since I was a little girl, I have been intrigued by Maybelline cosmetics. So much so I’d often catch myself day dreaming about wearing the brand’s iconic colors I’d see brazing the fashion spreads. However, it wasn’t until college that I was allowed to even wear makeup. Like any coming of age, I remember enjoying this newfound freedom with zest. And soon I was venturing out with a group of my girlfriends to shops to pick up and try out all the gorgeous bold color shades we could get a hold of.
An obvious form of rebellion, of course, but one I was fully committed too. I even recall a few classmates imitating my favorite eye look combination: a cobalt blue and grey eye shadow eye. Curious how something magical, even life changing could come from picking up a Maybelline eyeshadow. But there it was…the rushing feeling of possibilities to create and transform.
And to this day, I am still using Maybelline products.
As a fan of the cosmetic company, I was excited to stumble upon “The Maybelline Story,” a rich memoir penned by Sharrie Williams, heir to the Maybelline legacy and the great-niece of Tom Lyle Williams – founder of the Maybelline company.This must-read memoir reveals fascinating facts tied to the cosmetic dynasty. Since 1915 Maybelline has been a strong presence in the world of cosmetics. Some of Hollywood’s leading ladies like Betty Grable, Carole Lombard, Hedy Lamarr, and Merle Oberon wore and fell in love with the line.And to think it all began with a spontaneous concoction of petroleum jelly and a little coal dust! For those wanting to captivating glimpse inside Maybelline’s beating heart, and its colorful history will devour each page.
With its 100 year milestone in the beauty industry, Maybelline continues strong–grazing the shelves with new products for us to indulge in every season. While my makeup repertoire boasts an wide range of high end and drugstore beauty products, Maybelline is still a necessary staple in my collection. A current favorite is their Rebel Bloom collection, especially their stunning lipstick in Orchid Ecstasy. And where would our lashes be without a healthy coat (or two) of their popular mascaras.
Thank you to Maybelline for awakening my first real taste in makeup at a young age, and for continuing to inspire the artist in me. Too many more mascaras and bold lips for years to come!
