To Brand or not to Brand? There really is only one answer: Brand. Our modern age is ripe of people trying to impress through facades of achievements and social media mirages of popularity. However, branding makes a lasting mark. It creates distinction. A brand stands alone – indifferent to public “references” in the form of online followers.
So how can you surpass the masses over-obsessed with their “Reputation” and actually build a viable “Brand”? Here are some key steps to help you take charge and start building your Empire:

If your first inclination is to describe yourself by a Job Title, then you need to do some soul searching and identify your qualities as a human being. Identify “who” you are outside of your job (i.e. Adventurous, Hard-working, Loyal, Open-minded, an Artist, a Philanthropist…). Putting into words who you are—apart from any organization affiliation—will help you to know precisely what to highlight when building your personal brand. Next, using those descriptives, create a marketable “10-second pitch” about who you really are. On interviews and when networking, a concise summary of who you are, together with your unique marketable qualities, will build a personal distinct brand that distinguishes you specifically, and will make others want to work with you.

Seek to have a “Professional” not “Egotistical” Online Presence. Potential employers and Business Contacts will check your Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. Don’t kid yourself – people can see through a veneer of online bragging, or will inevitably look condescendingly on your posts that over-share meaningless personal information. However, a searchable query that reveals Dignity and Responsibility gives a visibly tangible reference to your personal brand. With your personal “qualities” already clear in mind, it shouldn’t be difficult to do. Keep your sites updated regularly and always keep it professional instead of personal. Always have a professional email address that doesn’t imply a party-going or egotistical image. Branding is about the long term, and creating a lasting dignified legacy.

Strong business relationships begin with meaningful lasting impressions. While it may seem old-fashion, sending a hand-written thank you note for a well-received meeting is a great way to building those strong partnerships. It is also so incredibly rare that it displays class and makes you memorable (i.e. After working with someone, be proactive to leave a well-worded reference on their LinkedIn page). Show respect for others’ time by being prompt for everything: meetings, thank you notes, assignments, etc. Showing gratitude is a great way to not only show respect, but also gain the respect of others.
Remember it takes time, months or even years to build a brand. Branding is a long-term strategic mindset that goes beyond living (and posting) in the moment. If you do, you can enjoy your legacy both now, and in the future.
