It’s friendship issues on this week’s episode of Drop Dead Diva, as Stacy tries to get Jane to talk to her. Unfortunately, Jane is pushing the ‘it’s not a good time” card, so Stacy is having no luck in that department.
Elsewhere, Grayson is involved with Kim’s assistant, and they decide not to arrive in the office together.
Needing help, Kim’s dad goes to her office so she can help him convince the president of a baseball league to let him coach a group of kids. Apparently he was kicked out since only parents or guardians of a player can coach.
While Teri talks about planning a baby shower for Kim, Miss USA Donna Andrews walks in. Jane is a little star struck, as she is a huge fan. Donna gives Jane a memo, which contains a list of top 10 finalists, however her name is not on it. Jane asks if Peter Bronson is rigging the pageant. She says they are taking the memo to the Federal Communications Commission since they have jurisdiction over broadcast programs like pageants.
Stacy tries to convince Jane on why Owen would make a great sperm donor. She acts out the two sides of the conversation, giving Jane the legalities of using Owen’s sperm. But Jane tells her one thing she hasn’t considered is the fact that she might still have a chance to get back together with Owen. But Stacy tells her that she did in fact consider it, but she doesn’t believe they will ever get back together because if there had been a chance, Jane would never have kissed Grayson. Jane isn’t too thrilled at hearing this.
Now to Jane’s case. She tries to convince the FCC about the favorites and contestants in a pageant. Donna tells the judge how important the talent portion is since it’s now worth 40 percent. Jane also tries to convince the judge that Peter Bronson does not care about the pageant. However, the judge chooses to not make a federal case about the pageant because Peter Bronson is a job creator.
In order to help keep her dad in his position as coach, Kim unwillingly decides that as of today her dad is now her roommate. He is then reinstated as coach.
Jane tells Grayson about her case. He comments that the pageant wouldn’t have been of interest to Jane. But she totally changes his mind when she starts talking about how the contestants help their countries. Grayson knows that when Jane is passionate about a case, she doesn’t give up. He advises her to forget the FCC and file a Qui Tam lawsuit (used when the government refuses to enforce certain laws, private citizens can step in and sue on the government’s behalf as a whistleblower and are entitled to 30 percent of recovered damages).
She thanks Grayson and goes off to help Kim’s baby shower, which is not going well at all. Kim is just eating, while no one wants to play the games. Out of the blue a cop walks in. Teri mistakes him for a male stripper, but the cop is just there to arrest Kim’s dad for child endangerment. It turns out that without the parents’ consent, Kim’s dad took the 9-year-old kids to the Santa Monica Pier and one of moms called the cops.
On the stand, Donna gets questioned about a reality show in the works, making her look bad. When Mr. Bronson goes next, he insists that he is not rigging the pageant and his defense shine a light over the paper he uses for his memos. The memo has a logo, but the one Donna had didn’t have one. So he calls it a fraud and the case is dismissed. Jane is upset with Donna since she believed she lied to her.
Wanting to avoid going home, Jane talks to Teri about her fight with Stacy. Teri tells her to stand up to Stacy. Jane does just that. At home, Stacy tells Jane that Owen said no to being a sperm donor. Upset about his refusal, she has been baking a lot of cakes.
Grayson tells Jane that Donna’s coach was the one with the idea of a reality show but Donna never wanted to do it. She ended up firing the coach. Jane goes to apologize to Donna for not believing her. Together they determine who was to gain more if Donna was out of the pageant. It comes down to Miss China, who can play the piano amazingly. But Donna says she is a friend and doesn’t think she would have placed the memo for her to find.
Kim’s dad is offered a plea. He is willing to take it since he looks like an irresponsible dad. The woman who called the cops in the first place, tells Kim that her dad is a good man and she should be proud of him.
Jane decides to confront Lanfen (Miss China). Jane tells her she believes she planted the memo. She also tells her that she wasn’t in the green room because she was called to take publicity photos, which is not allowed. However, Jane suddenly knows who rigged the pageant and it wasn’t Lanfen, because when a contestant wins, a country wins too. She puts Bronson on the stand and all the evidence is laid out about his bribery toward a government official. The pictures were for the victory parade already scheduled for Miss China. Jane request all charges dropped and Mr. Bronson get arrested.
In diva style, Jane tells warns him to “never mess with a beauty queen”. Bravo Jane! Donna is then entitled to 30 percent of the money or as suggested by Jane, the new owner of the pageant. Donna is very happy with that announcement, and promises to be the best pageant owner.
Jane tells Owen that she’ll stand by his refusal to be Stacy’s sperm donor if he thinks they have a future together. But if he doesn’t, he should be the sperm donor.
At court, things go well for Kim and her dad. It looks like they have a brighter future together.
Grayson tells Kim’s assistant that he’s not a fling kind of guy and wants them to go on a real date. Just great! Will it ever happen for Grayson and Jane?
Stacy tells Jane that Owen agreed to be her sperm donor. Jane hugs her, looking toward Owen as he passes by. She now knows they no longer have a future together. So far it looks like Jane has lost the both men she loves. Guess we’ll have to see what’s in store for her.
