Fashion trends change very quickly and what looks good on your favorite celebrity may not be so flattering on you. Often the reason can simply be the fact that the celebrity’s skin tone is just different than yours. So it’s important to pick hair colors that best suit your own skin tone. Find out how.
What is your skin tone?
Find out what your skin tone is by wearing a white shirt and standing in front of a mirror in bright, natural light or incandescent light. If a yellow or red tone is the predominant color in your skin, you are a warm tone. On the other hand, if a pink-blue tone is the overriding shade, then you are a cool tone.
You can also determine your skin tone by looking closely at the color of your veins in natural light. If they appear green, you have a warm skin tone. If they look blue, you possess a cool skin tone. Gold jewelry looks better on people with a warm undertone, whereas silver jewelry looks better on people with a cool undertone. Finally, black compliments people with a cool tone while brown flatters people with a warm tone.
What is your complexion?
There are two categories of people with cool undertones—light cools and medium to deep cools.
Light cools: These people have pink, beige, or pearly skins with gray or blue eyes. Hair colors that will suit such people are light brown, ash brown, platinum blonde, and white blonde. Colors like taupe, honey, wheat, or ash are good for highlights.
Medium cools: People with this complexion usually have olive or dark brown skin with eye colors like dark brown, green, deep blue, bluish-green, or brown. Hair colors like burgundy, cherry, mahogany, garnet, black, or coffee brown suit them. A violet-based red color suits people with such complexions. These colors can be used as a base color or as a highlighter.
People with warm undertones can also be categorized into light warm and medium to deep warm.
Light warm: People with this complexion have a “peaches and cream” color or ivory colored skin. Their eyes are brown, yellow-brown, or green-hazel. A honey brown hair color or a golden based hair color befits such people. Caramel low-lights can be added for emphasis. Very light shades or very dark shades should be avoided. Shades like light ash brown, strawberry blonde, or golden blonde work well. For highlights, golden-copper red colors or beige blonde looks good.
Medium to deep warm: Such people are either fair skinned with freckles, or olive skinned, or have darker skins. Colors like chestnut brown, chocolate brown, dark golden brown, auburn, mahogany, and espresso suit them best. Golden blond should be avoided because it adds to the yellow undertone of the skin and looks unhealthy. For highlights, colors like cinnamon, copper, caramel, and burgundy are good choices.
A rule to remember is that you should choose a shade that is more than three shades darker or lighter than your actual hair color. The right color can make you look healthy and glowing.
