So when Smile Brilliant contacted us to try their complete at-home whitening kit, we jumped at the opportunity to get rid of the pesky stains and get our teeth pearly white and ready for the summer selfies. With several teeth whitening sessions under our belt now, we’re more than ready to take you into the entire whitening process with us, and share our review of the Smile Brilliant

INSIDE THE KIT

Developed by a team of dental professionals with more than 30 years of experience, the system allows customers to have a self-tailored kit based on their own dental impressions. To start, there are two preferences to choose from: nonsensitive and sensitive. So depending on how sensitive or not your teeth will determine which whitening gel suits you best. Both preferences have three systems each to choose from depending on the severity of the teeth stains and the need for maintenance.

The kit consists of:

• 2 Impression Trays: Used in combination with impression material to create a mold
• 3 Sets of Impression Material: To make your own dental impressions (1 extra set of material in case of an error)
• Custom-fitted Teeth Whitening Trays: Exactly like your dentist would make. Finished trays include 1 upper and 1 lower tray.
• Professional Teeth Whitening Gel & Desensitizing Gel (If Applicable): Dentist-strength 22% Carbamide Peroxide in 3ml syringes (quantity depends on kit chosen).
• Professional Lab Service: Professional dental lab will receive your impressions, create an exact model of your teeth, and send you a custom-fitted tray
• 3-Way Postage: All postage between you and the lab is covered (2-way for orders outside of United States)
• Instruction guides: Step by Step instructions, how tos and tips on how to create your impressions and use the entire whitening system.

CREATING THE MOLDS

When we first opened our kit, our eyes immediately went to the Catalyst and Base pastes. We have never created an impression before, so we were a bit nervous about how the process would work. Fortunately, Smile Brilliant provided a complete guide with visuals (Thank goodness!) for us to use. Make sure to read everything on it several times before you start mixing the catalyst and the base paste as you need to work pretty quickly before the material hardens.

Side note: We ended up having to throw out our first impression for that same reason. It’s important to get the most accurate and detailed impression of your top and bottom teeth.

Once you’ve finished making your trays and they’ve dried, it’s just a matter of packing your upper and lower impressions in the enclosed pre-paid envelope and return card (filled out), and mailed back to Smile Brilliant. Your custom whitening trays will then be created and sent out to you within 5 business days after receiving your impressions. International shipping will differ.

GETTING STARTED

Our custom-fitted Teeth Whitening Trays were mailed back to us quite quickly, which we definitely appreciated it. The trays are sent in a protective white denture box to preserve the shape and keep them clean. As we mentioned already, we have never had teeth impressions done so we were a bit nervous about how the trays would fit. But there was nothing to worry about as the trays were a great fit. However, just be aware that you can experience a slight tightness when wearing the trays, but not painful.

We chose to do our whitening session at night as the guide suggested so we wouldn’t run the risk of undoing the whitening process by eating food or drinking any beverages afterwards.

To prep for the whitening session, we brushed our teeth with water (no toothpaste)  and made sure our trays were clean and dry.

Ripping open one of the packages labelled Whitening Gel, we took out the syringe. Don’t be afraid of the word syringe. No needles are involved. After twisting and removing the cap on the syringe, we applied a thin, even line of gel along the front outer surface of the upper tray. We then dried our teeth with a clean dish towel and inserted the upper tray using a slow forward motion to avoid the gel from sliding to the back of the teeth. We followed the same steps for the bottom tray.

There was some sensitivity we experienced during the process, especially when we put on the bottom tray. However, we don’t normally suffer from overly sensitive teeth so our sensitivity level with the whitening gel and custom trays were on a scale of 4 out 10. So everything was comfortable for us. Not wanting to overdo our first whitening session, we opted to  keep the trays on for no more than 45 minutes. But you do have the option to keep them on for 3 hours at a time as you continue to use the kit.

After the 45 minutes were up, we took the trays off and brushed our teeth with toothpaste this time around. Our teeth felt squeaky clean with no leftover residue, which is always appreciated. On inspecting them in the mirror, we could already see a an improvement to our teeth, especially our bottom teeth.

To avoid any sensitivity issues that might arise overnight, we chose to apply the desensitizing gel to each of our trays (using the same method as the whitening gel) and insert the trays in our upper and bottom teeth respectively. We wore the trays for no more than 20 minutes, making sure to only remove the trays and spit out the remaining gel. Although our sensitivity to the whitening gel was on the lower side, our teeth did feel a bit sore from wearing the trays for 45 minutes. Luckily, the desensitizing gel did ease the slight soreness.

We chose to do the whitening session every other day to give our teeth a break in between.

OUR THOUGHTS

One of our favorite features about the Smile Brilliant whitening system is how custom tailored the kit are to your specific teeth. A reason why we just don’t like using whitening strips anymore. Not only are they a hassle to put on and keep on our teeth, but we rarely get the results we want. And unlike a professional teeth whitening at our dentist, this kit is a fraction of the cost.

While this kit has everything you need to get those pearly whites, it definitely requires time and commitment. Not so much on the application process, but in the waiting process, which if you don’t allocate at least an hour and a half, can lessen the kit’s effectiveness. We had to manually set reminders on our phone to remind us to do a whitening session before going to bed. Wasn’t a deal breaker for us whatsoever, but definitely something to consider if you’re not great at setting reminders in advance.

But the thing we love the most about this whitening kit is the results. We have tried whitening strips which only do an okay job, but never really wow us. And although we like the ease of whitening toothpastes, they don’t have the fighting power that professional whitening systems have. As we have continued to use the whitening treatments and trays, our teeth have gone from a heavily yellow tinge to white in as short of a month. Not only are we more confident when we take selfies, but we actually take every opportunity to show our pearly whites.
