Mustaev Lustrous Cream Base & Liquid Liner Brush Pen Review

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]fter going on a short Project Pan over the summer, and cutting down on new beauty purchases, we are now excited to see what’s new in the world of makeup and skincare. Our first swing back into makeup is two products that come from Mustaev, one of our favorite new brands we discovered at The Makeup Show LA earlier this year. The first product we played with was their Lustrous Cream Base, followed by their Tension Fit Liquid Liner Brush Pen. Check out our review and demos of these two makeup products to see what we thought of them.

Lustrous Cream Base

On first appearance, the lustrous cream base looks completely white, but when you look at the product from a different angle you can see the pink pearl particles. Conveniently packaged with a pump, there is no mess to worry about. To use, you simply pump out a pea size of the product on your finger tips and apply it over the face. Let the product settle on the skin for a few minutes before proceeding with your foundation.

With one layer of the lustrous cream base, you can see a subtle difference on the skin that makes the face look more healthy and hydrated without adding too much shine to the skin.

We chose one of our favorite face products, the Too Faced ‘Born This Way’ foundation to see the cream base at work. Just using one pump of this medium to full coverage foundation on the face, application was quick and smoothly. There were no patches, or worse peeling that sometimes results from water base liquids. We were able to blend the foundation into the skin for a smoother  complexion, and avoid the dreaded caked on look. The Too faced Foundation already adds a dewy look, but the lustrous cream base took it up a notch, leaving our face looking more glowy and supple, while keeping it natural-looking.

Tension Fit Liquid Liner Brush Pen

Brush Pens are incredibly popular as they give the ultimate control to create those thin, precise lines. In fact, it’s one of our favorite ways to apply liquid liner in general. The Tension Fit Liquid Liner Brush pen has a calligraphy-type pen that creates smoother lines without tugging on the eyes. The brush pen leans more on a dark brown-black shade rather than jet black. As the swatch above shows, the brush pen can create thin lines or can be easily doubled for a thicker wing look.

When applying the liquid liner, it’s crucial to shake the pen a few times before the product starts to glide more smoothly. For best results, start at the middle of your upper lash line and move outwards.  The brush pen tends to dry out faster, so you will have to shake it a few times to get the product going again. Be advised that the product can smear so keep the lid closed for a few seconds after application.

Lustrous Cream Base

With the heat we’ve been getting in Southern California and our not so happy dry skin, the lustrous base cream was right up our alley. We were initially concerned about the pink pearls in the product and how they would look on our skin, especially during the day. But we found the cream base sink into the skin on application without leaving us looking like a disco ball. In fact, the lightweight cream base is the perfect blend of highlighter and moisturizer, adding a nice touch of radiance and moisture to the skin. On testing out the “base” functionality of this product, we were pleasantly surprised to find how well our foundation looked on top of this product. It did not look cakey, greasy or patchy, even when we applied it over the foundation on the cheekbones and down the bridge of the nose. The skin just looks healthy and supple, while keeping the skin looking like skin, which is exactly what we look for in a base. We would have loved to see a corrector version of this product, where it not only adds highlight and hydration to the skin, but also tackles on any redness or reduces the appearance of pores. Overall, the Lustrous Cream base is our favorite of the two products, as we love that freshness on the face. Definitely recommend this product for those dry skin gals like us or those wanting a more natural highlight glow to the face.

Tension Fit Liquid Liner Brush Pen

We love the concept of the Tension Fit Liquid Liner Brush pen, but unfortunately had no success with the formula. As we lean on the oily eyelid spectrum, even the waterproof formula could not hold. Those who don’t have oily lids will have no issue with the staying power, and will in fact like the precision of this brush pen. Another issue we came across during application was how drier this formula was in comparison to other brush pens we have used before. It took several good shakes for the product to work, and even then it wasn’t as carbon black as it’s said to be. It leaned on a darker brown-black color. We tend to love our liners to be more on the jet black, so we were hoping for this black brush pen to be more opaque, which is a shame since we love the flexibility of the brush.
