Say you’re at a buffet for dinner. There’s an array of food choices! What foods do you gravitate towards? Is it burgers, hot dogs and fries? Sweets and treats? Or do you pile on the meat and potatoes? Now it’s okay to have these things, every once in a while. However, if these types of foods comprise your normal dietary routine then you may want to consider modifying your diet by adding superfoods.
Why?
Superfoods are nutrient dense calorie light foods, which mean they pack a lot of punch as far as goodness goes. And because they’re calorie light they don’t add more inches to the waistline. They are superior sources of anti-oxidants and vital nutrients (nutrients we need but can’t make ourselves), which help protect our cells from mutations and aberrations that can lead to disease.
They are also rich and vibrant in color like red, orange, purple, green, yellow and white. Green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, seaweeds, herbs, bee products, wild caught fish and lean meats are great sources of superfood. Look for organically raised produce and meats to ensure you’re getting high quality foods–free of pesticides and other toxins.
Here are some examples of superfoods you can add to your diet:
- Green Superfoods – green leafy vegetables, wheat grass, barley grass, blue-green algae, chlorella and spirulina.
- Fruit, Nut and Seed Superfoods – goji berries, purple/black grapes, raw cacao, acai, maca, noni, young coconuts, coconut oil, raw macadamia nuts, raw almonds, hemp, chia & flax seeds,
- Seaweed Superfoods – nori, dulse, kelp, arame, wakame, and kombu. Use certified organic brands.
- Herb Superfoods – aloe vera, ginseng, nettle and echinacea, rosemary, turmeric, garlic, cinnamon, basil, and cardomon.
- Bee Superfoods – bee pollen, royal jelly and propolis.
- Fish – wild caught Alaskan salmon, Arctic Char (used in sushi), Sardines, and Anchovies.
Okay, so you won’t find the majority of these foods at a buffet or at most other restaurants for that matter. However, you still can make good choices when you eat out. Instead of the burger and fries choose the salad and salmon or the broiled chicken and stir fried vegetables. Another option could be a piece of lean meat with steamed veggies. Don’t forget the salad bar. There’s tons of several good choices to make here like salad greens, tomatoes, peppers, onions, seeds, olives, fresh fruits. While you won’t always be able to eat organically, it’s alright to eat out once in a while.
So even though you won’t always be able to get the best food you should be eating, you can still make good, solid choices when you eat out. .
