Losing your job can be one of the toughest challenges you can face, particularly if you have a family to support. So ask yourself this, how long could you survive if you were to be unemployed? It’s the kind of scenario that most people don’t want to think about, but a bit of forward planning and a positive outlook can make a world of difference if the worst happens.
Facing Your Finances
The cost of living is high enough without having to worry about “what ifs”. So having some savings behind you can really be a lifesaver if you happen to become unemployed. The key is to figure out how much you need to live on each month, and try to work towards saving three months’ worth of your regular salary – this will give you a safety cushion to fall back on while you look for another job and will mean that you can focus on a solution to the problem rather than worrying about getting into debt (or more debt). The earlier you face up to your finances, the easier it will be to see a way forward.
Staying Positive
This is probably the biggest challenge of all. It’s easy for many people who are unemployed to fall into a trap of panic, stress and negativity, however this only makes the problem worse and harder to find another job. Try to look at the positives – if you have some savings, then you can use these until you find another job, or you can live on your partner’s salary. Put your efforts into finding a new and better opportunity and your positive attitude will be rewarded.
Cutting Back
It’s really tough to have to make cutbacks, especially if you’re used to a good standard of living. But try to remember that it won’t be forever, and focus on reducing costs where you can. If you’re not working then you can save costs on your daily commute and lunches, and there are plenty of ways to reduce your grocery bills – you could even try growing your own food if you have enough space outside. Buying second-hand, recycling and even upcycling has never been more popular so you can get creative when cutting back.
Embracing A New Beginning
While this was probably not part of your life plan, becoming unemployed can sometimes be the best thing that could ever happen to you. For example, have you always wanted to see if your hobby, skill or passion could be turned into a business of your own? Unemployment can give you the time and space to really consider if you want to carry on along the same career path or try something completely different, such as being your own boss.
Finding yourself unemployed is a huge shock and can turn your life upside down – but with some forward planning, creative thinking and a positive attitude you can emerge from this particular rollercoaster happier and healthier than you’ve ever been.
