On this week’s episode of Drop Dead Diva, Deb’s mother, Bobbi is back and in need of Jane’s help after being sued by a former dance student. But that won’t be the only thing on Jane’s plate.
Jane is excited to meet her mom (well actually Deb’s mom), but on her way to meet her, memories of dance class and how tough her mom was with her comes flooding back. Once there, Jane finds out that Bobbi is being sued for negligence because a student got injured in her class. She asks Bobbi if she has insurance, but Bobbi says that will not protect her reputation.
Grayson is looking at his old high school year book., when Kim asks him why he’s going down memory lane. He explains that an old classmate needs a lawyer. In comes his old classmate, Fiona, who tells Grayson she finished her first big sculpture called “community spirit”. However, a month has passed since the sculpture has been installed any yet she’s hasn’t been paid. The case looks clear cut, but Grayson finds out that it’s not all black and white. Especially after he goes to look at the art, and finds out the City guys refuse to pay for a 12 foot vagina.
Jane is meeting with her client and the other party to try to come to an agreement. But instead, each party argues about whose fault it is. Before it can escalate, Simon Grundy tells everyone they need to shut up. Turns out the insurance company has assigned him to her. He tells everyone to leave, and scolds Jane for lack of judgement on bringing an emotional client and an emotional mother together. Jane doesn’t take a liking to Grundy. Unfortunately for Jane, they’ll be working together.
Fiona feels like six months of work she put in to making the sculpture was for nothing, after Grayson tells her that her sculpture will be taken down. Back at the office, Grayson ask Kim and Terri what they think about Fiona’s sculpture. Terri likes it, and says she wants one.
Stacy tells Jane that since she is worried about Owen’s heart, she baked some heart healthy cookies to ease Jane’s mind. Jane tries one but puts the cookie down in disgust. In comes the annoying Simon and grabs a cookie. Stacy’s tell him if he was raised in a barn, he looks at her and says “I washed my hands”. The scene is hilarious, especially after we see Simon stuff the bad tasting cookie under the fruit bowl.
At court, Keira (the injured girl) is put on the stand, and shares her wish to become e a dancer. Then the opposing lawyer uses the 911 call Bobbi made. In the call Bobbi is saying, “I’m sorry Keira I’m so sorry”. Keira confirms it was Bobbi who made the call and blames her for the incident.
Next on the stand is Abby Lee Miller. Jane is not thrilled about this. They show Ms. Miller the video of Bobbi’s instructions on dance and Miller says Bobbi sucks. Jane fights back with a video showing how mean and intimidating Miller is with her class. But the opposing team counterattack by showing how Miller has had no students suffer any career-ending injuries as opposed to Bobbi. Jane tells Bobbi it would be best to just settle the case, but Bobbi does not want to settle.
Owen comes to the rescue, and finds the City in breech. He orders them to pay Fiona what they owe her. But soon after, Kim tells Grayson they’ll need to get an emergency injunction since the City is putting a scaffold on the sculpture because they want to add wings. Grayson says he knows where to find a judge.
Kim and Grayson knock on Jane’s door to ask for an injunction. Jane does not want them to interrupt Owen because she is trying to protect his heart. She tells them to lower their voice. So when Kim asks for an emergency injunction in a quiet voice, Owen is confused. After he gives them the injunction and they leave, he asks Jane if it’s him or is something wrong with them ? Jane says they’re just acting weird, and goes off to meet her client.
But when Jane goes to talk to Bobbi about why she’s jeopardizing the settlement, Bobbi ends up firing her.
Determined to help Bobbi out, Jane goes to question Keira’s dad. He says his wife puts too much pressure on their daughter because she wanted to be a dancer herself. Keira wants to do other things, like skate boarding. She asks him to testify against his ex-wife but he refuses. He then tells her they already settled with the insurance. This surprises Jane and she rushes off.
As Kim and Grayson work on winning Fiona’s case, Grayson has Terri call Jane to tell her Owen is sweaty and pale. Jane runs in yelling, ” Your Honor…Your Honor!”. She urges Owen to take a break. But while on break, Owen tells Jane that she’s the root of his stress. Jane is surprised since she assumed she kept him calm. Because of the break time, Terri got the extra time to chain herself to the sculpture and call attention. Now Grayson and Kim can use the Vara Statute to work in their favor. Owen rules that the City should not touch Fiona’s art work. They win the case.
Meanwhile, Jane wonders why the ambulance got to the scene so fast. Parker explains the ambulance was in a nearby emergency call with a little girl who got injured on a skateboard. This catches Jane’s attention. They call Keira and her mother in front of the Judge. Jane asks if she was the little girl who was injured then left the scene. Keira admits she was, her mother is shocked since she never knew her daughter skateboarded. The case is dropped.
Owen walks in as Jane is showing Bobbi a video of Deb as a little girl dancing, and getting up after she falls down. Jane introduces Owen as her fiancé. Bobbi is happy for Jane, and then leaves to attend a party. Owen tells Jane that he promises to eat more greens and exercise if she acts like his fiancé and stops being his nurse. While we pull for Grayson and Jane, we can’t help but smile at Jane and Owen’s touching moment at the end.
