On the steps of Pasadena’s City Hall, the Pasadena Symphony and Pops presented its annual Music Under The Stars on Oct. 5. Conductor extraordinaire Larry Blank lead the JPL Chorus, orchestra, and special guests Vicki Lewis, Susan Egan and David Burnham on a wonderful music journey featuring pieces from broadway, films and the Great American Songbook.
Music Under the Stars has been become one of the city’s most anticipated music celebrations. Everyone is encouraged to come early and set up their chairs for the pre-concert activities, which include gourmet food trucks featuring fare from Pie N Burger and many other local spots. There’s also an instrument “petting zoo” for children to get the chance to play around with various musical instruments.
With the lightly clamor of buzz in the air and the JPL Chorus lightly singing away, the night had every expectation of being an incredible one. And indeed it was! From the respectful silence during the presentation of flag to Egan’s comedic rendition of Anita Renfroe’s “Momsense“. It was everything great about music and more.
One of the highlights of the night included Burnham’s fantastic version of “I Happen To Like New York” as it truly showcased the vocalist’s extensive talent. However, let us not forget Vicki Lewis’ power singing chops as she masterfully brought to life “Sing Happy”, the widely popular song from Liza Minnelli. Lewis’ stunning rendition would have made any Minnelli aficionado proud.
As the night came to a close, and Blank lead his assemble for one final encore, we were given the opportunity to really appreciate what a gift music is to our ears, to our community and beyond. And that is truly the joy of music.
