As avid beauty enthusiasts, we’re always thrilled to try out new makeup gadgets and tools. Recently, Wayne Goss from GossMakeupArtist on Youtube, launched his own makeup brush collection on Beautylish.com. The collection features 8 makeup brushes designed by Goss and handcrafted in Japan. We were given the opportunity to get a sneak peek at the Beautylish’s launch party. While we were impressed by the collection, two brushes caught our attention immediately. Here’s a inside look and review of Brush 01 & Brush 07 from this makeup brush line.

A Look At Brush 01

Like all the brushes in the collection, this one follows a number system as opposed to the traditional brush function label. According to Goss, this is because all the brushes have multiple uses. Some of the functions brush 01 has is foundation, softening the appearance of large pores, contouring and highlighting. But for the sake of the review, we wanted to test out it’s primary function: foundation.

DESIGN: This brush sports a sleek, black handle which has a nice weight to it without any added bulk. Unlike many other make up brushes, no metal case holds the bristles packed together. Often times, this can cause the brush to come loose. This is not the case with these. There’s an obvious artistry and care that went in to the design work in order to ensure durability. One of our favorite features of these brushes is how they are 100 percent cruelty-free and made from natural hair.
PERFORMANCE: The bristles feel incredibly soft. This is definitely a must, especially for face brushes since we do not want or like any tugging on the skin. This brush makes it very easy to apply liquid and creme foundation, and can speed the foundation process a bit. But for those with problematic skin, we suggest taking some extra time to really buff the product in the skin, and buildup coverage where necessary. As shown above, we were able to apply Revlon Colorstay Whipped Foundation really nicely. Even with the few extra minutes we took to apply the makeup, it was stress-free. This can be because of how soft, but compact the bristles are. As far as diminishing the appearance of large pores, we did notice a little bit of improvement when we used circular movements around the nose.
CARE: For those worried about the white bristles, there’s no need to stress. Using a bit of olive oil and water to deep clean the brush, we were happy to see the bristles return to their original white self.

A Look At Brush 07

Brush 07 is labeled primarily as a lip brush, but it can also work with gel eyeliners, brows, or eyeshadows. We decided to test out all the ways we could use this make up brush.

DESIGN: What attracted us to this brush was the size and shape. It resembles a small flat paddle brush with its compact bristles. However, the brush tapers at the end a bit, so it gives us the option to be more precise or blend out the edges
PERFORMANCE: We were surprisingly impressed with how easy it was to shift between the multiple functions this makeup brush has to offer. It’s often hard to find the right type of lip brush, especially if we’ve chosen bright lip sticks, since many can be too flimsy. But brush 07 applied our OCC Lip Tar quick and easy without any nightmarish disasters. We then moved on to NYX Roll On Eye Shimmer to see how it would work with glitter. We were prepared for major fallout but again we were pleasantly surprised. The product clung to the brush and there was minimal fallout. Finally we used the brush to apply gel eyeliner. We found gel eyeliner to not be the best use of this brush. At least not if we’re looking for more precision when we’re creating a thin line.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall we are definitely impressed with Wayne Goss’ makeup brushes. We can tell that extra care was given during the production of these beautiful handcrafted brushes. But the selling point is how well these can be adapted to meet everyone’s individual beauty needs. These really are great multipurpose brushes for applying makeup. However, we can see the price be a negative for some. We do agree the brushes lean on the higher end than other brands, especially if you take in to account drugstore ones, but given the fact that the brushes were handcrafted from Japan (and backed up by Goss himself), we feel the high quality, versatility and performance can be justified. For those curious about this line but hesitant on the price, we suggest checking out one of the eight brushes to test out first before committing to the entire collection.
