I’m sure every woman, probably everyone, at one point or another has thought about what they would do if they could go back in time. I know I have.In Landline, author Rainbow Rowell explores this very theory. Check out my short review of this moving journey of a woman rediscovering her marriage, the past and what the future holds.
Georgie McCool (awesome name, right?!) is a writer for a popular television show. She is married to her husband Neil and they have two daughters. Neil tends to just go along with Georgie’s every whim, but when her job once again gets in the way of family plans, he decides that maybe enough is enough. He takes their daughters on the Christmas vacation the whole family was supposed to attend, and leaves Georgie at home to tend to her work. Georgie feels guilty about her decision to stay home and the way her life with Neil has gone so far. When several attempts to reach him fail, she tries the landline phone in her childhood bedroom. Neil finally answers, only it’s Neil from fifteen years in the past. Now Georgie has to decide, does she do her best to make sure her life stay exactly the way it has gone, or does she try to alter the past for Neil’s benefit?
I love Rainbow Rowell’s writing style. She has a way of bringing every character to blooming life and making you feel like you are a part of the story. Landline was no different. I felt connected with Georgie and felt myself trying to urge her onto the right path throughout her journey.
Landline is a wonderful contemporary story for anyone who is married, loves a good story, or simply grew up in the eighties.
