[dropcap]G[/dropcap]otham went darker after Monday’s episode as Gordon and Bullock investigate the disappearances of homeless children.
The show opens up with Alfred walking in on Bruce burning his hand over a candle. He calls Bruce a “stupid kid” then hugs him, and tells him everything is going to be all right.
We then see a group of homeless kids warming up near a fire when a van drives up. A woman introduces herself as Patti (Lili Taylor) and her partner Doug (Frank Whaley) to the kids. Patti starts to jam a big needle on the kids’ necks, knocking them out. Cat sees this and runs off. A homeless man tries to help but gets killed. One of the kids is able to run off but doesn’t get far when Doug catches up and throws him through a window.
Gordon and Bullock go in to investigate the dead homeless man. While Gordon is upset no other cops are around, Bullock just wants the case over with. He doesn’t care about a bum in the streets. An officer shows up, and says he was at a restaurant where a kid (possibly on drugs) went through a glass, and that took priority over the bum. Gordon calls him a bad cop.
They go question Mackie, who tells them about the Lady with the big pin she had injected him, and why he ended up going through the glass. Bullock doesn’t believe the kid, so he threatens to beat him up. His bad temper continues to escalate causing him to punch someone and starts to argue with Gordon.
When they talk to Captain Essen, she doesn’t care. It’s Gotham so it’s a beat or get beaten sort of attitude. Essen wants everything kept quiet. She doesn’t want the press getting a hold of the missing children.
Meanwhile, Penguin is limping his way down the road when he stops a car, and two young men pick him up. They start mocking him. This turns out to be a big mistake when one of them says, “did anyone tell you, when you walk you look like the penguin.” This ends up being his last words as Oswald takes a bottle, breaks it and kills them. He then drives away and finds a trailer to rent.
Falcone pays a visit to Fish. He accuses her about throwing off the balance—
insinuating that her actions have caused this unraveling of criminals looking to take control. He also makes sure to tell her how a dying man is very honest, letting her know that Penguin had talked.
Angry beyond words, Fish throws everyone out of the restaurant. She wishes Oswald was alive so she could hurt him some more. She also badly wants to kill Falcone, however Butch tells her it would be too early to make a move on him. Fish swears someday she will.
Elsewhere, Major Crimes unit is investigating the disappearance of Oswald. They visit his mother Gertrude Kapelput (Carol Kane). Like any mom she thinks her boy was a good boy. She has no idea where he could be, except she blames it on a woman. Montoya makes sure Gertrude knows they are not corrupt.
After learning about the missing children, Barbara tells Gordon it would help if the people knew. She goes against Gordon’s wishes, and calls the Gotham Gazette and tells them about the snatched kids. She feels she is doing the right thing. When Essen finds out someone let the public know, she asks Gordon about this. He denies calling, which technically he is not lying, even though we know he disclosed the information to Barbara.
They go back to figuring out who sells the ATP fast acting drug used to knock the children out. It turns out the drug that was used years ago in Arkham Asylum. Three companies are licensed to use the drug, so Gordon gets a warrant for them.
Patti and Doug go to Quillan Pharmaceutical to pick up the kids. They need the children for the Doll Maker. Quillan wants more money before handing them over. That doesn’t stop Patti. She stabs an old guy with the pin only to notice the police are about to interrupt them. Gordon and Bullock enter, and Quillan starts answering questions. Doug is at the side pointing a gun at him. Quillan makes a subtle head move, letting Gordon know that someone is on the side. Right at that moment, Gordon moves forward right as Patti turns off the lights, and they all start shooting. Patti and Doug are able to get away, and Quillan is arrested.
Fortunately, they do get the kids out. The Major turns this to his advantage, when he makes a public speech about how they will help these kids. He promises to care for them and send them off to foster homes or a correctional facility. Gordon being such a caring person doesn’t like this plan as he considers it as a way to lock kids up without a trial.
Once again Patti and Doug show up dressed as the bus driver and the other as a guard. They hijack the school bus with the kids. Gordon goes to question Quillan, but all he gets out of him is a logo. It’s turn out to be a Trident, so Bullock and Gordon head over to the place.
Cat scratches a man’s eye after escaping the school bus. Evil Patti shoots the man and goes off to find Cat. When she does catch up with Cat, raises her gun and is about to shoot when Gordon finds them and knocks her down. Once again the kids are saved, and off they go to homes and shelters.
Gordon visits Bruce Wayne, after Alfred requests him to do so. As they talk, Bruce tells him that he burned his hand in order to test himself. Bruce feels bad for the children and wants to give them money. Gordon tells him what the children need most is someone to care for them.
Back at Penguin’s trailer, we see he has has kidnapped a kid because he needs the money. Unfortunately, this does not work well for him since the kid’s mother does not believe it’s a real kidnapping. Oswald is very disappointed.
The episode ends with Gordon talking to Cat. She lays a bomb when she tells him she saw who killed the Waynes. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
