Inside Too Faced ‘Born This Way’ Foundation & Review

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e recently had the chance to try the not yet launched ‘Born This Way‘ foundation from Too Faced at Generation Beauty. Officially releasing on June 16, this oil-free foundation is said to provide medium to full coverage while blurring imperfections and leaving the skin a natural, radiant appearance. As fans of makeup looking as natural as possible, we were excited to test and see whether this foundation could give us that full, flawless complexion but still allow our skin to look like skin. Keep reading for our thoughts and full review of the Too Faced ‘Born This Way’ foundation.

This new foundation is infused with Coconut Water, Alpine Rose and Hyaluronic Acid. The coconut water helps naturally replenish moisture levels, while the Alpine Rose brightens skin’s appearance, and lastly, the Hyaluronic Acid promotes smoother, youthful skin.

Color Range/Selection: As of right now, there are 12 shades to choose from ranging from Porcelain to Caramel. While we do appreciate that there are more shades in the line compared to what we generally see in some brands, color range for darker complexions is limited as the darkest shade color is Caramel; a light expresso color. However, women in the nude to warm, golden complexions will have a better chance finding a match here as there is a wider selection geared along the nude to warm beige range. Side note: We have been told that more shades, specifically for darker complexions, will be added in the future.

Application: Although Liquid foundations can be easy to apply, they can also be quite messy to work with especially if they’re more water-based, and come with unforgiving packaging. This is not the case for the Born this Way foundation as there is a build-in pump that offers control over how much product you want and need–making application much easier.

[We applied our moisturizer prior to application but skipped our face primer to determine how well this foundation could diffuse and blur any imperfections on the skin. ]

When applying this foundation [Our shade is Light Beige], we chose to try it with a buffing brush and our fingers. As recommended, we applied a small amount from the center of our face and blended outwards. We quickly noticed how fast the product absorbs into the skin rather than settling on the skin–a hazard for dry skin gals like us. We let the foundation set for a 15 seconds or so, and applied another layer of foundation to bring it to full coverage, again starting from the center. Immediately we were impressed with how our skin felt and looked.

The foundation did an excellent job covering red spots, acne marks and discoloration on the face after application. We loved how the foundation added the perfect dewiness to the face without leaving the skin looking oily or parched.  So the foundation can work for all skin types. But if concerned with the dewiness, simply add a setting powder on top. The best part is how natural the skin feels and looks with the foundation on. Plus we didn’t detect any chemical scent or fragrance on application.

Performance: With any good foundation we test out, we want to know its wear on different conditions. So we checked to see how well it performed under flash cameras by snapping some photos to see if this product gave the dreaded ghost cast we want appearing in any photos. Safe to say we saw no evidence wearing the Born This Way foundation. In fact, we found that the foundation photographed beautifully. Our skin still looked like skin, but had a smoother looking complexion. This could due to the lack of SPF we found in the foundation.

Durability: While the Too Faced Born This Way foundation makes no claim to have long lasting power, this did not stop us from checking to see how it held for a given time. So after eight hours of everyday wear, here is how the foundation held up:

As you can see, despite some of the coverage wearing off around areas of the face, the foundation was still fairly intact given the eight hours of wear, which included drinking, talking on the phone, and hot climate. All with no setting spray or power after application nor  touch up in between.

Packaging: Too Faced is known for their delicate, gorgeous packaging, and their newest foundation is no exception. Decked in a frosted glass bottle with a black cap and gold rim and detailing, the foundation bottle looks classy and chic. Given the $39 price range, we expect and love the high end feel the packaging gives to the foundation. Plus the sturdy build-in pump is a great selling point.

Overall: One of the things we love about this foundation besides how easy it is to apply on the skin is how well it looks on the skin given its full coverage potential. We love when a product doesn’t add layers of product on the skin but can still give us that flawless complexion we want. And the Born this Way foundation is the perfect balance of radiance and functional that makes it every day appropriate.
