You are what you eat, from head to toe. Have you ever heard this saying? I remember my mother telling me this as a child. It was her attempt to instill in me the desire to eat nutritious foods like spinach or broccoli, when I didn’t really want to eat them. Now older, I understand the impact behind those words.
This concept is not a new one. According to an article on Forbes Magazine, epicurean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin and philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach helped originate this concept in the 1800’s. They believed the idea that ” food affects one’s health and state of mind.”
Even American weight loss pioneer, Victor Lindlahr, declared that food actually “controls health.” He wrote that, “Ninety percent of the diseases known to man are caused by cheap foodstuffs. You are what you eat.”
Imagine that! The slogan ‘you are what you eat’ is well over 100 years old.
Now fast forward to today and we find nutritionists and health advocates are saying the very same thing. World leading authority on raw food and super foods, David Wolfe, also affirms this when he says:
We use far too many pesticides, fungicides, and larvacides. We inject hormones into cattle then pasteurize the milk to death. We genetically modify things we know nothing about. We’ve chosen to conduct this global experiment on ourselves…which has shown us one important thing – that FOOD DOES MATTER!
Have you ever wondered why some people act the way they do? The food we eat affects us at the cellular level—to the very thoughts we think. If you look at what we eat, it all makes sense. We are what we eat!
So, what should we be eating?
It’s about eating foods that are nutrient-dense “real” foods. In other words, foods not produced in a factory or massed produced. These foods are not necessarily fast nor as convenient as what you get in the supermarkets or McDonalds. They can even cost a bit more, but the actual benefits to your health far outweighs the extra cost. And can also help guarantee a healthier and happier life.
You may not feel the effects of a poor diet now, but as you grow older this will not be the case. The toll of eating the standard American diet (SAD) is steadily adding up— until the body will no longer be able to handle the excess fats, empty calories and toxins you’ve fed it over the years. Chronic disease will set in and you’ll wonder how you got it. You may even say, “it runs in the family,” but stop and consider it could be from a familialpattern of poor eating habits?
But disease does not have to be a part of your future! Take control of your health now. You can have a better, healthier future tomorrow. It’s worth it. You’re worth it!
Look for my upcoming articles, where I will talk more on what super foods are, how they help protect the body from illness and disease, and which super foods should be purchased organic vs non-organic.
