With commercials like eHarmony or Match.com on TV, it’s no surprise why many have turned to online dating . It’s the perfect way to open yourself to meet a wide range of individuals, where you could potentially find the “one”. But before you open an online profile, we have put together several helpful dos and don'ts we think you’ll need to navigate through the world of online dating. PLAN AHEAD Don't just live in the moment In a society where we’re encouraged by others to be spontaneous and “live in the moment”, it’s no wonder why many of us just jump into the dating scene. Sure a little spontaneity can help break some of the initial jitters we might be experiencing, but never underestimate how doing a bit of research before hand can give us a better chance of finding the “one” for us. Do the Google dance Forget about the pen and paper. It’s nothing as serious like that, unless of course you’re the note-loving kind of gal. What we are saying, is take the time to Google reputable online dating services. Find out the popular sites, and see which of those are the most successful. Remember to check the reviews to see if they are heavily based on real client feedback. You’d be surprise how many site’s fabricate their own ratings. LEARN YOUR TYPE Don't waste time Once we’ve found the ideal dating site for us, it’s now time to take a moment or two to figure out our type. For many of us, there is no easy or quick answer. Nor can it really be. We don’t expect you to know from head to toe exactly how your ideal type should look, act, and be. But having a general understanding of your preferences does not hurt to narrow down the long list of profiles you’ll be seeing on the site. It’s going to be incredibly tempting to talk to all the people who immediately reach out to us. We’ve all been there. All it takes is someone to send us a “Hey Good looking!” or “Your beauty blinds me” message, and we’re pulled in, even if it’s to laugh at how cheesy the message sounds (and most are). DO the elimination Although, we are firm believers of keeping an open mind since we know people don’t necessarily fall into our ideal “type” all the time, this is not to say that we should completely compromise on we truly want. Learn to trust your instinct. If the person you’re getting to know on the site is someone who keeps rubbing you the wrong way, put an end to it. While you might be looking for long-term, some will not. Some will probably see online dating as just another opportunity to “hookup”. If that’s not your game, why play it? The point is not to use so much time and energy on someone who is completely incompatible to us when chances are we’ll be back to square one. We could easily use that same time and energy on someone else who looks more promising. SAFETY Don't rush on the personal info One of the perks of online dating, is the sense of safety we feel behind our computer screens. In part, we do reduce some of the physical and emotional fears we would normally experience in traditional dating. But this does not mean we should forgo safety precautions. Don’t give out personal information. Common sense right? Wrong. Many of us get caught up in all the fun we have chatting with people that we forget to be cautious. So even though we’ve been talking to that incredibly good looking (well based on his profile) guy for a week now, we shouldn’t pull down the walls just yet. One common mistake some make is exchanging nude photos with a few days. Even celebrities have learned the hard way about how their nude photos can get in the wrong hands. If you want to be respected then you need to give yourself that place. The moment you send risqué photos or give your number to someone you’ve just met, you’re putting yourself at risk. What we think might be a great catch, could easily turn into a unsavory experience. When it comes to your safety, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Do take backup Let’s say after a good period of getting to know one another, it’s finally time to meet the hunky guy in person. We suggest taking back up. What kind of backup? It could be anything really. Maybe plan the first date in a public setting like a theme park, bowling or dinner at a restaurant with a busy ambiance. You still get the one on one feeling, but with a peace of mind. Taking your own car on the first date is a definitely a good idea. Tell the date you’ll meet them at the place you plan to hangout. Not only will this give you the option to make a swift getaway if your date isn’t going to well, it also eliminates having to rely on the date to drive you back home, especially if they turn out to be the overly touchy kind.
